KNU Statement concerning Release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
We, the KNU solemnly honor the determination and courage of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and warmly welcome, together with the entire people, her release by the SPDC military regime on 13-11-2010.
However, our concern for the health and security of more 2000 political prisoners of conscience remains and it is necessary to apply effective pressure on the SPDC military clique for the unconditional release of them.
It is satisfying to see that friends, colleagues, diplomats and thousands of supporters gathered to greet and talk with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, as soon as she was released from house arrest, and to hear her talk about plan for her future political activities.
It is our belief that continued support of the entire people is needed in order to prevent the SPDC military regime to incarcerate her again, under some flimsy charges to stop her activities. As Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is an exceptional leader of the people and the nation, we hope that she would give priority to participation, at all cost, in the national reconciliation process such as the Second Panlong Conference.
As an organization among the ethnic nationality forces, the KNU has been denied the opportunity to participate in the process for cessation of the civil war, establishing genuine peace and national reconciliation and, as a result, it has to carry on the war of resistance in self-defence up to this day. Though the KNU is desirous of reconstruction of country peacefully in unity and in line with the changing local and global situation, it will not be able to stop unilaterally its armed resistance, which it has to carry on inevitably, so long as the military dictatorship and the hard-lined extremist nationalists are in power.
Nevertheless, we, the KNU, would like to inform on behalf of the Karen people that we believe in what Daw Suu has said. If all those who have been struggling for truth push in unison with one mind, in consonant with the desire and interest of the people, we will be able to overcome the current political stalemate and resolve permanently the political problems politically.
